20th Censored Story of 2016!

This is the post excerpt.

Censored2016-front-cover-663x1024

Ever wonder if every story in the media is truly every story ever written? Although some may believe yes, I’m sorry to say that not every story gets published or receives the attention it should. One of these stories that never made it out in the public eye is The Walmarting of Education. What’s that you may ask? Continue checking out my blog for some explaining!

“If It Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix It”

In conclusion, be aware of what is going on around you!! In the media things are constantly being blown out of proportion and being made into much bigger deals than they need to be. Our school system is constantly being changed, for example (common core) and these education changes are okay….the money and business changes are not! Schools can’t be thought of and looked at through a business perspective because soon getting an education will become one big competition. We can’t look at our students like customers and our teachers as employees working to bring money in for the school – we need to fix things within our communities and make schools a more fun environment. School should be about getting an education, not a paycheck!!

Parents and children already have a big stress on them when trying to figure out where they want to go/send their child…why add in the extra stress of throwing private schools into the mix?

Charter Schools Are Better?

“Charter schools are independent public schools founded by not-for-profit Boards of Trustees”

“Any student eligible for admission to a New York City public school is eligible for admission to a public charter school”

“A charter school is a school that receives government funding but operates independently of the established state school system in which it is located, and in some cases is privately owned”

definition.jpg

No matter how many definitions you find to explain what a Charter school is, you will  pretty much the same one. A Charter school is like a public school in a sense, where anyone can get in, and it’s funded by the government – not parents paying for scholarships or tuition to get in! The Walton Family Foundation is doing a great thing by choosing to expand Charter Schools throughout. These schools encourage kids and give them the support they need to learn great skills and make it fun in the process!

Is Private Schooling Better?

Later on, the family had apparently began working on charter schools not out of the good of their hearts, but were able to compromise after it became clear that privatization of public education was a extremely controversial.

“Just as Walmart forces stores that can’t match their prices to shut their doors, so charters — which bleed students, and their funding, from traditional schools — cause local schools to close down.”

Private Schools =

  • Tuition money = Not everyone can pay their way.
  • More money needed = higher taxes.
  • You must “get in” = not everyone can make it into the school, thus causing a divide in neighborhoods, people, and communities.
  • More competitive = more competition to get in and to stay in.
  • More strict = more rules and more room to act out and break them

Are We On The Same Page?

When you think about Walmart closing 269 of its’ stores, you may not see it as a huge deal yet when you look at the image as an individual and through an economic perspective, you may change your mind. The Walton Family had  started a plan that would give $1 billion to support the expanding of charter schools over the next 5 years. The WFF has been very successful in the fact that 1 in 4 charters nationally have received startup funds. Now although we view this as a great thing and see that WFF is fixing the bad they’ve done with some good – others may not view this with a kind heart. Here’s a quote from the Censored Stories article where it shows that maybe they didn’t have our best interest in mind.

“Although it’s been well documented that original Walmart founder Sam Walton was not very fond of American public schools and in the 1990’s unsuccessfully tried to privatize American schools. While the family foundation funding charter schools through charity seems harmless, the organization’s true interest lies in the voucher programs, an apparatus for school privatization through which public tax dollars can be diverted to private institutions.”

  • In other words, it says the organizations real interest was with state funding – an organization of school privatization in while the public tax dollars are a distraction to the private institutions.

Facts Look Good So What’s The Problem?

In 2017, Walmart had about 6,363 international stores operating and of those, 4,672 in the United States. Whenever you think of Walmart you automatically think of lower prices for good quality – you can’t help but think of their slogan “Save Money, Live Better, Walmart.”

Wal-MartAlwaysLowPricesWalmart Stores started up in Arkansas in 1962 and have continued to be successful throughout the years. We’ve seen more stores pop up in many different locations, and they continue to expand. They’ve expanded overseas and across multiple borders, with the United States being the center of the business. Walmart has employed more than 1.5 million associates at more than 5,000 stores nationwide. Some Walmart stores are bigger than others, but you know walking into Walmart that you will find whatever it is you are looking for. You can get anything in Walmart, it’s one of those stores that has so many departments and with that you end up buying way more than what you needed when you first walked in! The returning process is so simple and they make sure to ask if you bought the wrong product, or if you want a new one if the product wasn’t up to your liking instead of just returning it. They do their best to make sure their customers are happy. Now, with all these great facts being stated you may be asking why shut down 269 locations? At this point in time, I have no logical answer because Walmart offers too many great advantages to everyone. I’m not 100% sure as to what prompted the decision to put the plan in motion to shut down 269 stores, but I’ll be researching to find out!

Supplies, Supplies and More Supplies.

As the summer comes to end kids begin to get excited (depending on their age) because school is around the corner. They get letters in the mail about who their teacher will be, and a list of supplies that the teacher requests for them to have to be successful throughout the year. I was always one of thos4fbc0ed656b4f.imagee kids that wanted my mom to buy every item on the list – and every year she would give me the same answer “You won’t use everything on the list it will be a waste of money.” As a kid I always hated that answer and got annoyed when she wouldn’t buy me everything listed, but she was right. Although it was right of the teacher to over stuff the school supply list, it was waste if you bought every item on it. Ever wonder how much money we waste on school supplies? Or how much money all the supplies we need add up to? You need your notebooks, binders, folders, pens, pencils, as you get older textbooks, and a backpack. “The average family with children in grades K-12 planned to spend $630.36 on clothes, electronics and school supplies this year.” Although we use all these things at one point or another, you don’t realize how much all these things add up to. In a way it’s not fair because in order to go to school we are kind of forced to buy them. It’s a shame that we need to spend so much on supplies that are just going to get ripped, run down, and wasted as the year goes by but it is what it is….there’s nothing we can really do about it. Sometimes you have to think about it – how much have we spent on all school supplies over the years? Kind of seems like it’s never ends!
